In one paragraph, respond to these questions: what are your thoughts about The Sound of Waves? How realistic is it? What is your favorite moment, so far?
In a second paragraph: choose one of these three paragraphs topics and write a very clear, organized, well edited paragraph about the concept as it relates to you, not The Sound of Waves:
1) impact of nosy people on a situation 2) is gossip avoidable? 3)
parents trying to help their kids and they make a situation more
complicated instead.
As of right I am not enjoying the book. I my personal opinion the book is very bad and I can't connect to the book so I don't like it. The best moment so fare, in my opinion, is the family visits the grave of the dad. Even tho it seams like not a fun and interesting chapter it is the closest chapter I can connect with. My dad is not dead but I have visited graves of family members and felt the sorrow. I have know idea if it is realistic due to the fact I do not know hot it was during that time.
ReplyDeleteOne of my pet peeves is nosy people. They are always are trying to know something that is non of their business and has nothing to do with them. Everybody is nosy at times because it is a human instinct to gain more knowledge, especially if it is gossip. My mom always asks how my projects for school are going and I will say oh, there good the writing is kind of tricky but I'll take care of it. She always asks to see it. If she doesn't like it she will tell me what to do. I'm always thinking mom if you want to write it like that just go write the thing your self. Let it be my work.
DeleteRight now the book is a pain to read every page I am dreading to have to read the next one. It is realistic for the time and location. It is also realistic with the cultures, how they celebrate festivals, etc. My favorite moment so far is probably when Hiroshi was describing his trip.
ReplyDelete3. I extremely dislike when I show my parents that I have an assignment and they immediately but in with how I should do it, when I should do it, where I should do it, and other such unnecessary things. The reason I don't like them doing this is because I can handle organizing my projects and I will ask them if I need help. They end up in the end just making my time take longer and making it will be become more difficult for me to concentrate with a "back seat driver" always talking to me.
They end up in the end?
DeleteI have been enjoying reading The Sound of Waves. I appreciate the vivid imagery, although I feel that all of the descriptions are not entirely necessary. The vast majority of the class does their reading at night, a time when one is already tired. Descriptions which simply drag on and on do not engage a reader whose eyes are already drooping. Due to some dramatic twists in the plot throughout the most recent chapters I am now anticipating what will happen next. The setting is fairly realistic, and the Shinji's financial situation is not unusual. What I do find unrealistic is the way that the book has been narrated. The thoughts do not seem like they belong to a teenage boy. I loved when Shinji and Hatsue had their first conversation, this is one of my favorite moments. It was so nice to have them actually meet after Shinji had been thinking about her non stop for such a long time. I could feel how much Shinji obsessed over Hatsue, and I was rooting for him.
ReplyDeleteGossip is not avoidable. In this day in age it is extremely easy to share information, either through technology or simply word of mouth. As long as humans remain social creatures, there will be gossip. People feel the need to share information, there is no denying it. Gossipers do not always have malicious intentions, sometimes gossiping is simply a hobby. Excessive gossiping does on occasion lead to extreme circumstances, but gossip is not necessarily a bad thing. In a world where information travels so fast people often think twice before acting. The looming thought of being gossiped about acts as a sort of second conscience for some people.
I'll admit, I'm not enjoying the book too much. However, I do think the imagery and descriptive language is good. I can picture almost every situation and place. My favorite moment in the book so far is when Shinji and his fishing friends all look over the first note that Shinji received from Hatsue. It just seems like they're all bonding more than they ever had. It seems like they can all relate. I think it's very realistic. A group of friends will often get together and maybe talk about a specific person someone in the group likes.
ReplyDeleteGossip is in no way, shape, or form avoidable. We all try not to, but it's pretty much impossible. Any time you are talking about someone without them knowing, that is gossip. Think of how many times a week, even a day, you do that. I know we all want to stop gossiping, but it won't stop anytime soon.
I think The Sound of Waves is an ok book. It is definitely not my favorite, but I can see why some people would really like it. I don't dread reading it and I would probably read it if it was recommended but there is no way I would read it on my own. I think the book is realistic but some of the things that go on are very unrealistic like their relationship and people's reaction. My favorite moment is probably when Terukichi beats up the two gossipers. I just found it really funny yet in a weird impressive because he was still proud.
ReplyDeleteA noisy person can really make an impact on a situation. Yes, everyone was curious, but being noisy is worst. The noisy person in a situation is normally, the one who ends up spreading the gossip. For example, Chiyoko. Also, a noisy person can lead to something that should be kept quiet to being put out in the open. Every secret is not meant to be shared. And to further prove the impact of noisy people in a situation, take all the people in the YMA. How did they find out about Shinji and Hatsue? From a noisy person, or just being noisy themselves which leads to Terukichi finding out.
At first, unlike a lot of other students, I was enjoying the book. I really liked the description of the island and the community. It was... odd sometimes... but other than that I kind of enjoyed it. As of late, however, it's been getting a little bit too cliche and dull. I'd say that what's going on in the background is very realistic, yet the whole Shinji-Hatsue situation is not. The only explanation I can get out of the part where Hatsue is naked in front of Shinji is that Hatsue waited there in hopes of Shinji waking up. Otherwise, what kind of person would just sit down, fully nude, uncomfortably watching their friend sleep. It's not that I don't believe in love like theirs, I just think that some of the things that went on was slightly unrealistic. My favorite moment would probably be the part where Hiroshi is in awe about the world outside of their island. I thought the folding chair bit was funny, as well as their 'Indian roleplay' after they got back to the island.
ReplyDeleteGossip isn't really something we can avoid. It's going to happen. I realize people might talk about me behind my back, some of whom I know, but I can't say I haven't done the same. We all do it at one point or another, whether we call it 'gossiping' or just exchanging stories... And it's not like I don't feel bad about gossiping, it just doesn't appear as such a big deal to ME when I know I'm not the only one wronging. While that's not necessarily a good rule to live by, it happens. I'm not so sure about 'nosy people' though. I can't say this for myself because my life isn't that interesting as all of you might think, so not many people try to get information out of me. Except for my parents, which is getting increasingly annoying. I'm started to suspect they're gossiping about me. And about parents.. a lot of the times they do end up making things a lot more difficult than they are. In fact Mrs. Kosberg once asked us the class if we really thought parents could relate to us, as they were once kids. However, not only have times changed but so have our parents. I doubt any of them really know what's going on like they tell us. For example, apparently my mom is telepathic and can sense people's thoughts just by reading their emotions. A lot of the times I just end up being brought a solution to a problem that never existed in the first place.
So far I have sort of enjoyed reading the book. For the first chapter it is good, then it becomes a little long, then I just feel like the pages drag on forever. I think the setting is realistic and the story seems probable so far. I really enjoy Hiroshi's arrogance compared to his brother's educate.
ReplyDelete3. I think that parents intervene in their children's lives with no bad intentions, but in the end I feel like it is better for children to learn from experience. If parents intervene and protect their children from everything, their children will be ignorant. If they don't intervene then the child might experience something bad, but they will learn from it unlike if they never see it. This is why I think parent intervention is a more or less bad thing.
So far I think the book is terrible. I feel like it is way to descriptive and makes the book exhausting to read page after page. Also I can't relate to it easily. The only part that I can relate to is the gossip on the island. In high school there is too much drama and gossip and in the book, gossiping is all the islanders do in their free time. I want to say that the book isn't realistic but I can't say for sure because I have no idea if their are islands like this one where there is no relation to the outside world and the whole community is built of the ocean. My favorite moment so far is when Shinji and Hatsue are naked together. I think that's hilarious.
ReplyDeleteParents trying to help their kids and they make a situation more complicated instead:
It seems like most of the time when I go to my parents for advice about a situation, they make it more complicated than it needs to be. This happens because of many reasons. The first reason is that parents think they knew what my life is like when they don't. They probably think they do know because they were once teenagers and they know all about high school. But what they don't know is that high school and just being a teenager has changed in 40 years. For example: one time, I had an issue with this kid outside of school and my mom found out about it. Instead of her coming directly to me and only to me, she decided to go to the other boy's mom as well. The mom's conversation led to the boy, who was actually my friend at the time, get in trouble. This resulted in me and my friend having tension and basically not talking to each other for a few months. Another reason why parents make my situations complicated is because they think they knew what's best for me. I'm pretty sure I'm old enough to know what's best for me better than my parents. And what I mean by saying what's best for me is the decisions I make and the people I'm friends with. Just because they're my parents doesn't mean that their responsibility is make my decisions for me. Even now that I'm older, my parents dont make me do as much as a kid, such as go to so and so's house or go to a party/dance. Instead, they will now make me feel bad about it. If I say I won't go to a dance, they'll tell me that it's my choice but they'll add little things in the conversation to make me rethink my choice. They will say things like "Is it really the right choice" or "You will have fun if you go to the dance, I know you will." How are they supposed to know if I will have fun? In that situation, they made me rethink my choice and I ended up going to the dance. They dance sucked as I knew it would. In conclusion, if you are stuck in a sticky situation, always go to your closest friends before your parents or else things can get complicated.
My impression of the book The Sound of Waves is alright, for I believe everyone has there own opinion and many people may consider this a really enjoyable book. The book is very intriguing and interesting but some people aren't looking for a love story and more of an exciting and suspenseful book that especially encourages you to read more. The authors imagery is amazing, and his description of everything is so clear and vivid that it makes you feel like your are right there experiencing the book in your own hands. As well this book is very unrealistic in my point of view because there aren't that many remote islands with a school that find it exciting to go on the mainland. As well I feel it is too unoriginal and common that, " These two young teens find love on a remote island no one has heard of and eventually get married," and that always happens in love stories. There is no originality to this books plot but in detail and in the events the author comes up with new and exiting events that flow through the story and make it as exciting as it is now. I feel that the book right now is turning dull, for it is almost like time is passing and nothing is happening. My favorite moment in this book was when Hatsue sneaks off to meet Shinji and the suspense kills you because of how unsure you are of if there going to get caught. During that event you keep telling yourself that there is no way they will get caught thats not how most stories go and BOOM! Hatsue's dad catches her and drags her back to the house and your so worried about what will happen next to them. There are many pros and many cons to this book but overall this is a very well written book to people who want a love story with a suspenseful story line.
ReplyDeleteGossip is no way shape or form avoidable. You can't stop people from sharing news and if you do they will still do it surreptitiously without anyone knowing. Everyone is gnawing on a bone trying to find the latest new and exciting news from there friend, for there is nothing more exciting than hearing a secret about someone you know. Have you ever played a joke on someone saying, " Hey! Did you hear that..." and then stop talking but they want to know because they are interested for the news to see if it is in anyway interesting and exciting. Many people feed off gossip and if you stop feeding... they'll go crazy and spread rumors in order to "stay alive." Gossip is never going to be avoidable unless they make it illegal and put voice recorders inside you that send your every word to the government, but that it very unlucky to happen. Overall gossip is a part of life and it's never going to go away.
Honestly, the sound of waves is a pointless book in my mind. I don't find the book at all memorable beside the beautiful imagery. It is a twist on Romeo & Juliet, and goes to show how mind dead today's literature. I do find it realistic, but in a different way related in today's growing world. For gay marriages and other sexual orientation, that make some parents and people uneasy. Not a man and woman relationship, like in the book. So I find the sound of waves unoriginal, and mind numbingly boring.
ReplyDeleteThe impact of nosy people is huge. In the book, when Shinji and Hatsue leave the observation tower and Chiyoko spots them. She doesn't know what is the truth. She will assume what she thinks, and she didn't get all the facts. The classic gossiping novel, that is predictable. A twist of words can lead to an outcome that you didn't want. It will take off and out of your reach. So the impact of nosy people is key in conflicts.
I personally dislike The Sound of Waves. I cannot relate to it at all, and the story line is incredibly boring and unengaging because of this. I can definitely say that I enjoy the heavy use of symbolism, but I also feel that it has a terrible effect on the realism of the story. It is really not very realistic, like William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, it has a young love that suddenly materializes. The one difference between Shakespeare's work and this, is the fact that Romeo and Juliet was likely intended as a mockery of young love, and a warning against the dangers of becoming too dedicated to someone you barely know. The Sound of Waves is idolizing young love, and making it seem like something we should strive after, when it is in fact dangerous and illogical.
ReplyDeleteNosy people usually have a negative impact on any situation. If someone is trying to get involved in something they should not be involved in, they will affect it negatively. For example, if someone is having a personal discussion with someone they trust, perhaps about a private matter involving that person, no one else should get involved. In many situations, another person might walk up and ask what they're talking about, which would be acceptable. However, these people would likely be told that it didn't concern them, and that they should leave. If someone is respectful, they would walk away, but far too often people do not do that. Instead these people intrude on the situation, and often make it much worse for everyone involved.
I personally am not enjoying The Sound of Waves so far. There were only a few chapters that I particularly liked but other than that the book can be super boring and makes me fall asleep. The imagery in the book is amazing, but it can go on for pages and pages and it is like get to the point already. I personally would drop this book if I was reading it on my own, and I hate dropping books. I also don’t like the fact that the love story is so similar to Romeo and Juliet and I didn’t like Romeo and Juliet. The stories are similar by they are all teenagers, and they fall in love with someone who they can’t fall in love with because of their families (except Shinji). I think the book is pretty much realistic. All the different classes is really realistic. Having a lower class and an upper class is everywhere. Although I don’t get how there is so much fish to go fishing every day year after year. How have they not overfished? My favorite moment so far would be when they were alone in the tower during the storm and he gave her the shell that he found earlier. I also really liked that he goes to his father’s grave every month.
ReplyDeleteGossip is never avoidable unfortunately. Wouldn’t it be nice living in a world that doesn’t have gossip? It would, but people love to gossip. As much as people hate being the person people are gossiping about, everyone gossips whether they admit it or not. At least once or twice or even more in your lifetime, you will be the topic (person talked about) of the gossip. . Gossip also spreads so fast that it is so hard to control. It is spread by people talking in person and talking over the Internet and it just doesn't stop.
In one paragraph, respond to these questions: what are your thoughts about The Sound of Waves? How realistic is it? What is your favorite moment, so far?
ReplyDeleteSo far, I think The Sound of Waves is an ok book. I am not dreading reading it, but at the same time I am not overly excited. I find the book to be half realistic. I think that gossip does spread around, but I think the book over exaggerates it. Also the book is hugely based on class, which I know in some parts of the world is very true. The parents' picking who the kid is going to marry is probably not likely in the USA, but may be likely somewhere else. My favorite moment so far was when Yasuo got stung by the bee, because I think he really did deserve it. This is what I think about the book so far.
In a second paragraph: choose one of these three paragraphs topics and write a very clear, organized, well edited paragraph about the concept as it relates to you, not The Sound of Waves: 1) impact of nosy people on a situation 2) is gossip avoidable? 3) parents trying to help their kids and they make a situation more complicated instead.
Gossip is not avoidable. No matter how much you wish or try to ban it, it is never going to happen. Gossip is like an addiction, no matter how hard you try to get rid of it you never can. This is because everybody wants to know what is up. No one wants to feel excluded or "out of the loop". Gossip is also a trait that a lot of people share. No matter what your stature is, you still can gossip to whomever. Gossip can make you instantly popular if you have the right piece to share. And at the same time it can make you a loner. Gossip can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. You can try to avoid it, but that is not likely. Gossip is not advisable for these reasons.
So far, The Sound of Waves is not the most enjoyable book I've ever read. Personally, I don't really like it which is a huge deal because I normally like every book I read. I think the book is too repetitieve and dwells a lot on the past. Throughout the book, there is never a huge new concept that is brought up. The conflict is constant the whole time. Although the descriptions in the book give me a vivid picture of the island in my head, I personally can't picture the book to be extremely realistic because I do not know the Japanese culture, and if a similar situation might be happening now. Almost every part of this book is Romeo & Juliet in a different culture. So far, my favorite moment in the book is the scene in which Yasuo attacks Hatsue to try and get her attention. This is my favorite scene because it is one of the only dramatic points of interest in the book. I still am having difficulty to understand the point of reading this book in english class. I'm hoping that there will be a dramatic ending that will pull the book together.
ReplyDeleteThe act of gossiping is extremely avoidable. Gossiping is when one talks about another person behind their back, regardless of if they are saying something positive or negative. Gossiping is avoidable because it is an act, which means one has control over what they say. For example, if someone were to tell you something in confidence, you can avoid gossip by not repeating what they have told you. Even if someone has told you something "not" in confidence, you can still not engage in the gossiping conversation. As a result, gossip itself is unavoidable but the act of gossiping and how an individual approaches it is avoidable.
So far, I have hated, disliked, and had neutral feelings towards The Sound of Waves. It is a very boring, uneventful, and most of all, overly descriptive book. The book is tedious for me to read, and has been getting worse each chapter. The book's over descriptiveness is taking too much of the book's text, rather than the actual story. Some parts are very realistic, such as the setting, but others are not so much, such as the coincedence of Prince Deki. My favorite moment so far was when Terukichi kicked and smashed the heads of the two boys at the bath house.
ReplyDeleteGossip is not avoidable, though it is reducible. No matter where you are, there will always be people who gossip, and it is inevitable. Avoiding gossip would be like avoiding hate, it will follow you around the world
So far, the sound of waves is not a book that I find enjoyable to read. I feel that the way it is written is not interesting, and because there isn't much mystery, there is nothing that draws me in. Because I like love stories, I do want to know what happens to Hatsue and Shinji, and yet their love is so unrealistic, in my opinion, it doesn't make you feel for the characters. Also, the fact that people don't just move off the island if it is so small and poor, doesn't make sense to me. Even though I don't like it very much, my favorite part so far is when Shinji and Hatsue are going to meet, but Hatsue’s dad catches her, and makes her come home. I like this part because I wanted to know what would happen to Hatsue and Shinji.
ReplyDeleteGossip is an aspect of life that is practically unavoidable. Anything one could do could be talked about by someone. Also, everyone has gossiped at some point in their life. The gossip could be big or small, and sometimes it isn’t even true. People use gossip mostly for their entertainment, even if it would hurt the other person’s feelings. There is no way to get around this, although some people have more gossip-worthy things to comment on. Even if it’s simply, “oh my God, did you see her fall down,” it is a form of gossip that can grow and change like one were playing that game telephone. It’s just human nature to say something that you see or hear. Gossiping is not necessarily a good thing to do, but everybody does it. Also, everyone has probably been gossiped about, whether they know it or not. Even if you try, there is no way to avoid gossip completely.
I'm personally not enjoying this book so much because it doesn't really have to much action in it. The only way i am interested in a book is if it has lots it has lots of action. Also, im the kind of guy that likes a mystery in a book. Mysteries usually lead to some interesting action in the story. This book is actually very realistic because one, there are people out there in relationships when their parents don't approve of it. Secondly, there are people in this world that do not have anything. They feel like they are trapped in this little box and there is no way out. I really don't have a " favorite moment " in this book. This book is so uninteresting that i don't even have a favorite moment.
ReplyDeleteGossip. Gossip is very much avoidable if you do not have the following around the situation. One, a person who likes to tell everyone in their neighborhood what they just saw or heard about. Two, people i like to call paparazzi. I call them that because because much like paparazzi, they follow you around and come up with the most ridiculous things possible. Why they do this, I have no clue. But this is what the people are like who " spread the word" or who stalk the higher class people, then pass it on to the " world "
I am enjoying/have enjoyed the book so far. It's theme is interesting, and the setting and characters really add to the story. I asked my aunt if she knew the book (my aunt is Japanese), and she remembers it from her father's time. I think it is very realistic, but the outcome is one from a fairy-tale, not a realistic ending. My favorite moment is when Uncle Teru thrashes those two young fishermen when they're in the bathhouse.
ReplyDeleteI think that, if they are kept at bay, nosy people can be avoided. Depending on the environment and the people in the situation, the information could be taked quickly or slowly. Also, I see how this ties in to Sound of Waves. The villagers on the island are nosy, and how it changes the situation.
I guess I would say that I have enjoyed the book. It is very "slow" at times, seeing how the main activity on the island is fishing. My favorite moment(s) is when there are sexual references throughout the book. Especially the part when Shinji is lying naked, and he sees Hatsue naked in front of him.
ReplyDeleteNosy people don't tend to be very good in most situations. They will most likely hear something that they are not supposed to hear, and there is also the fact that nosy people tend to be gossipers. This ties in to Sound of Waves very well. Island life is very dull, and is why gossip and nosiness is such a problem.
